Jonathan Safran Foer’s book title does not imply animal-eaters only eat animals and do nothing else. It is a way to de-objectify animals as merely ‘meat’.<\/p>\n

Sam & Sara #389: Eating Animals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sam:<\/span><\/strong> She claimed she was reduced to a simple label – an ‘animal-eater’, and nothing else.
\nSara:<\/span><\/strong> Strange, because I never did that. I only wrote about animal-eaters in general, and never said all they do is eat animals.
\nSam:<\/strong><\/span> Strange too, that she forgets that she reduces animals to simple labels every day, and nothing else.
\nSara:<\/strong><\/span> Such as?
\nSam:<\/strong> <\/span>Fillet, pork, beef, drumstick, nugget, roast… fancy non-sentient names.
\nSara:<\/strong><\/span> Sigh… as if these animals are just for eating?<\/p>\n

Sam:<\/strong> <\/span>Anyway, animal-eaters don\u2019t see vegans as plant-eaters, and nothing else either. But why use ‘animal-eaters’ anyway?
\nSara:<\/strong><\/span> The use of \u2018animal(s)\u2019 instead of \u2018meat\u2019 is a reminder not to objectify animals as \u2018meat\u2019 only.
\nSam:<\/strong> <\/span>What is a nicer term for those who eat animals, other than \u2018animal-eaters\u2019, that at the same time does not objectify animals?
\nSara:<\/strong><\/span> ‘Carnivores’ sounds harsh and most are omnivores anyway. But ‘omnivores\u2019 isn\u2019t a good term as it doesn\u2019t spur compassion for the animals.
\nSam:<\/strong> <\/span>What about ‘plant-and-animal-eaters’?
\nSara:<\/strong> <\/span>It’s a mouthful, but why not? Let’s just call a spade a spade!<\/p>\n

Since words have power,
\nmay all only use words,
\nand listen to words such,
\nthat they increase compassion and wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n
