Question: <\/strong>As long as f I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha within, it doesn’t matter to me whether I participate in a refuge ceremony as it is only a ceremony to me.\u00a0 It’s my own practice that counts after taking refuge, right?<\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong> Taking refuge formally is not supposed to be just another ceremony. It is supposed to be a crucial step of spiritual transformation that is meritorious, that benefits further practice of the Dharma. While practice of the Dharma after taking refuge matters the most, taking refuge is also part of Dharma practice, while marking its formal beginning. It is a practice of deep acceptance of the Dharma, to internalise commitment to it as solemnly and seriously as possible. Taking refuge expresses great humility to learn, deep reverence for the Triple Gem, and determination to practise the Dharma for life. Taking refuge this way forges solid karmic links with the Triple Gem, such that life after life, one will always encounter the Triple Gem – until enlightenment is attained. <\/span><\/span>Hope you take refuge soon!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
