A friend came across these phrases in a Buddhist website \u2014 ‘Who is Buddha?’ and ‘Buddha’s teachings’. He asked whether they ought to be ‘Who is the Buddha?’ and ‘The Buddha’s teachings’. He remarked that it’s ironical that such incorrect English is used very often in the West! I agree, because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.<\/strong> It\u2019s wrong to skip \u2018The\u2019, as \u2018The Buddha\u2019 refers specifically to
Shakyamuni Buddha instead of other Buddhas.
2. <\/strong>Buddhists refer to \u2018the Buddha\u2019 as… well… \u2018the Buddha\u2019!
3.<\/strong> The title \u2018Buddha\u2019 by itself is somewhat disrespectful.
E.g. We say \u2018the King\u2019 instead of \u2018King’.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
