Jehu [King of Israel] assembled all the people and said to them,\u00a0\u201cAhab worshiped Baal a little; Jehu will worship him with great devotion.\u00a0So now, bring to me all the prophets of Baal, as well as all his servants and priests.\u00a0None of them must be absent, for I am offering a great sacrifice to Baal.\u00a0Any of them who fail to appear will lose their lives.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0But Jehu was tricking them so he could destroy the servants of Baal.<\/p>\n

Then Jehu ordered,\u00a0\u201cMake arrangements for a celebration for Baal.\u201d\u00a0So they announced it.\u00a0Jehu sent invitations throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one was absent.\u00a0They arrived at the temple of Baal and filled it up from end to end.\u00a0Jehu ordered the one who was in charge of the wardrobe,\u00a0\u201cBring out robes for all the servants of Baal.\u201d\u00a0So he brought out robes for them.<\/p>\n

Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rekab went to the temple of Baal.\u00a0Jehu said to the servants of Baal,\u00a0\u201cMake sure there are no servants of the Lord here with you; there must be only servants of Baal.\u201d\u00a0They went inside to offer sacrifices and burnt sacrifices.\u00a0Now Jehu had stationed 80 men outside.\u00a0He had told them, \u201cIf any of the men inside get away, you will pay with your lives.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

When he finished offering the burnt sacrifice, Jehu ordered the royal guard and officers,\u00a0\u201cCome in and strike them down! Don\u2019t let any escape!<\/span>\u201d\u00a0So the royal guard and officers struck them down with the sword and left their bodies lying there.\u00a0Then they entered the inner sanctuary of the temple of Baal.\u00a0They hauled out the sacred pillar of Baal and burned it.\u00a0They demolished the sacred pillar of Baal and the temple of Baal; it is used as a latrine to this very day.\u00a0So Jehu eradicated Baal worship from Israel.<\/p>\n

Chancing upon the above,\u00a0I’m both appalled and consoled.\u00a0The first because of the violence involved then, of how intolerant one was,\u00a0the latter because of less violence nowadays(?), of how there is greater harmony(?)\u00a0It is better to cherry-pick scriptural elements of harmony to emulate,\u00a0than to emulate any violence in the pages of bloody history.<\/span><\/p>\n

One should not honour only one\u2019s religion and condemn the religion of others,\u00a0but one should honour others\u2019 religion for this or that reason [that is worth honouring].\u00a0In so doing, one helps one\u2019s own religion to grow and renders service to the religions of others too.\u00a0In acting otherwise, one digs the grave of one\u2019s own religion and also does harm to other religions.<\/p>\n
