A Buddhist organisation asked me to help write two short ‘politically correct’ statements on vegetarianism for a national documentary. This is what I came up with:<\/p>\n

‘Where available and dependent on various conditions,
\nlifelong or occasional vegetarianism is an optional but commonly encouraged practice
\nfor lay and monastic Buddhists to practise universal compassion.
\nThis is so as excess meat consumption is damaging to animal welfare, human health and the environment.’<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Actually, I prefer to leave out the word ‘excess’ in the last line.
