Smoking : Bad Faith

953900_cigarettesAt the convenience store, the lady in front of me in the queue asked for a pack of cigarettes. When she saw the picture of a close-up shot of mouth cancer on the box she was given, she said, ‘Ohh! Can I change the picture?’ The cashier smiled and swapped a box, while she was grinning sheepishly. Cigarettes sold locally have prominent pictures of Cancer patients on the boxes. Some are long shots and some close-ups. The point of the pictures is to discourage smoking, which can cause cancer. But apparently, it did not deter her. She chose not to have a box with a horrible picture, but the truth is, she still might end up with Cancer worse than that in the picture – precisely because she is in constant denial of the picture ever being relevant to her, thus the continual smoking and increasing of her chances of getting cancer. Likewise, if we look around, there are many warnings in life, which we either mindfully or mindlessly ignore, thinking that warned about will not happen to us. Yet when it happens, we lament ‘Why me?’ The answer is obvious.
