Dinner: Mortuary Inside

I was at a group dinner last weekend, during which the conversation centered mostly around food. That seen as ‘great food’ for most is but burnt carcasses to me, no matter how well masked the meat is with herbs and spices. I can no longer comprehend why anyone can be fascinated by meat, isn’t it obvious that it’s the seasoning that renders it tasty? I was wondering, do I really need to spell out the truth to everyone?

It was no surprise that I was the only vegan at the table. What was appalling was the amount of meat ordered. So much there was that a few plates were left untouched. Ordering animal flesh is already unthinkable, but to waste animals’ lives by not finishing the meat asked for is atrocious!

Is it really that hard to go for a kinder diet? Or does the word ‘compassion’ simply not exist when it comes to filling one’s stomach? Why would any sensible person want their stomach to be a mortuary? Have so many human hearts grown as cold as a mortuary’s freezer? Please, during this season of giving, at least reduce the demand for animal lives. Give the helpless animals a break. Go vegan! If not, go vegetarian!

  1. iloveveg,

I’m like u,mum will be afraid I do not have enough nutrition but I will just eat some fish to “pacify ” her.

I’m still trying to go vegetarian but no rush, we can first eat less meat, only eat fish & eventually no fish & meat at all!Pray for Buddha to help us along the way.
(by the way if you really crave for some meat,go ahead & eat but of course you must try not to , this is just for a start if you really cant control..)

Eventually we will be a vegan !!!Yippee!!!

  2. Hi BT,
thanks, I had gradually cut down on meat source and during the last few years when I reduced to seafood source, my mum actually bought more fishes for my diet and my friends would also order more seafood for me during gathering meals. So, I had in a way created demand for seafood more than my fair share which I really repent now.
I am glad when I finally remove seafood from my diet and mum now cooks more vege for me. She still nags alot so I have to ensure that I stay healthy else she will blame it on my diet.
I think my family and some of my friends will find me a bore/chore whenever I discourage them from visiting seafood restaurants or meaty outlets. I hope there are more nicer vegetarian places to recommend.
I had shown them the “Seeds” VCD before but at most an exclaimation and they revert to their meaty diet when they feast. I am sad when I see that it is still difficult to change their mindset on feasting.
Hopefully, with blessings from Buddha & Bodhisattva, they and all beings will change their mindset and become more receptive towards vegetarian.
May All Beings Be Well & Happy

  3. Wonderful! A list of vegetarian eatery places that opens from 1st day of CNY so that people can find alternatives to feast on.

In fact, the beautiful tradition of going Vegetarian on the 1st Day of CNY should be revived. My grandparents who were Non-vegetarian or Buddhist go vegetarian for the 1st Day of CNY. It passes on generation to generation …

How about putting this request at VSS, I think some veg*n eateries go to that forum … or anyone knows any Veg*n restaurateurs and get them to provide such info automatically to the right person and place, not only for CNY, for any other occasions or discount promotion… so everyone benefits!
    😉

  4. Understand the concerns of your mothers … I am a mother too!

You may wish to know that I am a thalassemia minor, a vegetarian since 1993 (more than 15 yrs) and went for blood donation (meeting the min requirement 13.0mg/dl for thalassemia minor), 5 times already between 2002 – 2008. And produce a boy now 12+ via normal delivery.

You can be quite sure this vegetarian diet is not a problem. Just remember to eat healthy.

Soon your mother will not have to worry! I always scold my boy for making me worry … sigh! But it is the nature for mother to worry about all the things of their kids, right.

    Must let go …

  5. I would suggest one to and buy the mock meat if one really crave for meat. Nowadays, mock meat tasted very like real meat, and personally i feel mock meat are like a good transition buffer for those who can’t let go of meat yet. Some more the taste and ingredients of mock meat has greatly improved throughout the years, it is no longer purely just gluten. 😉

  6. Hi Crystal et al, i just sent your suggestion to the folks at VSS.

Hi Raga, yup, mock meats are made of healthier ingredients these days, such as soy. It’s really not that bad now. I think meat-eaters should have less excuses to eat meat for its taste now that it can be mimicked accurately :bandit:

I am glad that temples now offer such lovely veg meal. When I was 10yrs, I had my very 1st Vegetarian cuisine – a delectable Vegetarian Meal @ Perak Cave Temple restaurant in W.Malaysia.
