Productivity Vs Tidiness

A colleague I sat near apologised for her work desk being messy. I grinned and replied that it doesn’t matter, as long as one’s work output is not messy. She agreed. It doesn’t matter if one’s life seems relatively messy (physically; not mentally), as long as there is a happy ending – the best of which is enlightenment, the second best of which is a good rebirth that leads one closer to enlightenment.

My table was messy too. It even had a couple of banana peels waiting to be trashed. Bananas eaten for lunch due to much work at hand… whose skins are not thrown properly yet… also due to much work. Though my stuff’s messy, everything is still in its place – as I know where to retrieve what’s needed. Orderliness is not always tidiness, though it’s a common perception that they are synonymous. I think there are three kinds of workers – those who are so free that they have plenty of time to keep their work desks spic and span, those who are too busy too keep them so, and those who are so hardworking that they put in extra time to keep things spic and span despite being busy. Right now, I’m the second!
