‘The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch’ by Neil Gaiman, Michael Zulli and Todd Klein is a fantasy tale that cautions us to ‘be careful what you wish for – because you might get it’. Many might dismiss this ‘law of attraction’ concept to be nonsensical, but it’s not exactly so – if it is explained properly. In the story, a woman who loves the wild mysteriously gets her wish granted when she visits a bizarre underground circus act. She becomes a She-Tarzan of sorts.
The mechanics of cause and effect is of course seldom explained logically in fantasy tales – especially since so-called magic is involved – that deemed to defy rational laws of nature. However, the exceptional case of Miss Finch aside, what you always yearn for you will also tend to feed conditions for in real life, little by little. In time to come, the seed of desire, having met with enough conditions, will ripen into the desired effect. This works both ways – for better or worse – for good and evil intentions. As such, the saying holds true indeed – ‘Be careful what you wish for!’ This is why giving rise to wholesome and lofty aspirations 0r vows is seen as essential in Buddhist practice.
