Question: In Chinese horoscope, the next year is that of the tiger. Some say it’s not a ‘good’ animal. How would you respond to those who discourage having a tiger baby?
Answer: Is it so that tigers are all not ‘good’? I have at least two good tiger friends. Just as there are good and bad sides of human characters, there are both sides to animal characters too – whether one believes in horoscope linking the duo or not! If you believe in horoscope, tigers are supposed to tend to be energetic and courageous leaders. In this sense, how bad can their lives be?
No matter what year we are born in, we carry over our karmic tendencies from previous lives, which are not shaped by horoscope – even if horoscope seems to predict character to some extent. (The problem is you can never tell when horoscope is really accurate or not – unless you can read minds!) Horoscope at most offers only a rough guide of character – which changes! If we cannot change our characters, we would be unable to evolve to become Buddhas.
No matter what year one is born in, there are strengths and weaknesses – according to one’s past karma and one’s present diligence. Our karma affects how and when one is born, while how we will turn out to be is up to nurturing and ourselves. What you can do to counter those against tiger babies is to search the net for famous successful tigers to let them know how they can become wonderful people too! (The Buddha did not say there is absolutely no truth in horoscope, but taught that we should not be obsessed with fortune-telling – probably because it is hard to tell which fortune-teller tells the truth, and because our destiny is not cast in stone. Monastics are also forbidden to tell fortunes.)

The Tiger planning for tiger baby?
Horoscope is too wide but I do believe those with similar karmic tendencies has some similar features.
I guess that’s how facial fortune telling started from, by observing people with similar feature would be likely of a charcteristic.
The post is based on a discussion with TDE-Weekly reader who is contemplating having a tiger baby!

Often, appearances don’t change as quickly as one’s present karma does. While past karma is bearing fruit now, the present karma one creates might be of another nature. That’s why some good-looking people might be presently evil, while some less good-looking ones might be doing much good now. In short, it can be highly inaccurate to judge by appearances… even by superficial ‘fortune-telling’. Amituofo
