Something I helped to answer for the press:
Q: Is current interfaith work too skewed towards looking for commonalities? Is it disrespectful to religions which are different, and might lead to deeper ignorance? Should the focus only be on common ground? Where does Singapore’s efforts stand on this?
A: To be realistic, we should realise that various religions have both similarities and differences. Sincere interfaith dialogue should be about the learning of both. True inter-religious harmony is possible only when we agree on what is best for secular society, while respectfully agreeing to disagree on other issues when necessary. For greater harmony, the key focus should be on common values such as universal compassion and mutual respect; instead of delving into differences in excess. Singaporeans generally understand this. Otherwise, it would be impossible for us to co-exist peacefully in such a small nation. However, we need to mindfully continue to safeguard this harmony through regular dialogue.
