One-Tracked Mind

The waitress served the pie
with an empty smaller plate
for putting slices of it.

I put it aside,
as I could use the big plate
I will finish eating pasta from.

A few minutes later,
the waitress asked
if she could clear my used plate.

But I already started using it for the pie,
while the smaller plate remained unused.
Didn’t she notice that?

‘Oh!
You can clear THAT one.’
I said, pointing to the clean plate.

Why must a waitress clear only used plates?
Why not clear the unused too?
Better to have less to wash too!

  1. Well, I am inclined to agree with you shian.
But the issue with most patrons (in the first-world country, most of the time) is that “reusing a served plate is unhygienic”. It’s sort of a taboo in f&b.

But it’s all in the mind, isn’t it!

  2. I try to do my little part by using only what’s minimally necessary. When I have takeaways, I usually return the disposable chopsticks and plastic spoons (can use my own if at home). If I can put chilli in my bowl, I won’t need the mini chilli/soy sauce plate.
At fast food joints, excess sugar, creamer packs and servettes, I return.
Hope to learn more enviromentally friendly ways.
Bless everyone to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE! (L)

  3. Hehe, when buying takeaways, you can have them in your own container too 🙂 I remember in the 80s our parents used to have metal containers to contain their takeaways… nowadays, it’s styrofoam 🙁

  4. hmmm… yup… first world culture is not always environmentally-friendly culture

    🙁

    Good tips, Noself!
