Which Stat Are You?

In ‘X-Factor: Many Lives of Madrox’ by Peter David,

Rictor: There’s plenty of people who think we’re evil. Appearances can be deceiving.
Rahne: Ninety-nine percent of the time, things are exactly what they appear to be.
Rictor: Yeah? Well, eighty-five percent of all statistics are made up, so there.

But isn’t that just another statistic?
Even if it’s true, how do we know which side of the statistics our perception belongs to?
The right or wrong side?
