Familiarity Breeds Complacence

Ironically, it is sometimes harder to encourage old friends,
especially those I had not come in contact for some time,
to come for Dharma classes I run.

My theory is that they have a strong past-created preconception
of what I’ll be teaching, and how I would be teaching,
and feel that it’s probably not much.

This is similar to how it can be difficult
to encourage family members to learn more about the Dharma.
Sometimes, it’s easier to share the Dharma with strangers!

  1. In teaching we always set the stage for what we will be teaching, who we will be introducing, to prepare the audience for what they will be hearing/ seeing.

I always make it a point to speak about the strengths or the good things of someone when introducing them to other friends. This will allow them to start a common ground of respect.

If you want to “preach” to friends and families, it will be more challenging as they are the ones who know us best, our faults and fears. But if you would like to “share” the change in yourself and the realisation that you have found, then i am sure they will be more than happy to lend an encouraging ear to a dear friend and brother.

  2. Yes indeed. I think I should spend more time with old friends, to hang out with them – to catch up with each other… before the sudden sms invitation. Amituofo
