The graphic novel series ‘Sweet Tooth’ by Jeff Lemire should not be mistaken merely as a simple man versus monster story. In a world set in the near future, the line between human and beast becomes blurred when human-animal hybrids are born. It is an exploration on the nature of humanity and bestiality.
Some humans, despite their forms, are more bestial than animals.
Some animals, despite their forms, are more humane than humans.
Some hybrids are more bestial than animals/ humans.
Some hybrids are more humane than humans / animals.
Some are between being humane and bestial.
Some alternate between humane and bestial.
As they gather and interact, tension and conflict arises. We are reminded that what makes us humane is how we treat humans and the non-human, or even semi-human. And despite appearances, all can be more humane.
