Wandering Thought #200: Ride
In the journey of life, we are all riding on a bicycle, with the hind wheel representing the past, the front wheel representing the future, and the ‘wheel’ of pedalling in the centre representing the present. Everything is in motion. Paths passed cannot be retraced in the exact ways they were taken. Paths ahead cannot be predicted for the exact ways they will unfold.
We cannot pedal backwards to reach the hind wheel, as it is always behind us, just like we cannot return to the past, (except by recollection and reflection for realised insights and missed hindsights). We cannot pedal forward to reach the front wheel, as it is always before us, just as we cannot grasp the future, (though we can plan we are going to from moment to moment).
Even in the present is change, in constant motion, as we pedal away. As long as we pedal well in the right direction with the right diligence now, with experience from the past, while with less attachment to it, we will be able to reach a better future, while with less fret about it. This is how we can mindfully enjoy the ride now. It is the way to create only wonderful memories and an ever bright future!
