[11] Fools cling to the useless as precious.
Fools discard the precious as useless.
[12] Old friends are often the very ones
who assume they know you well,
when they have long stopped
keeping up with your changes,
becoming mere acquaintances.
[13] To check if you really understand
the letter of the teaching,
try to translate it.
To check if you really understand
the spirit of the teaching,
try to teach it.
[14] There is no truly worst thing for
good Pure Land practitioners
as even the so-called worst is
seen as the best motivation
for the best birth in Pure Land.
[15] One who dies
with an ungiven cent
died a cent too rich.
[16] Lack reflection and repentance lacks.
Lack repentance and resolution lacks.
Lack resolution and betterment lacks.
[17] If your aspirational prayers
have yet to inspire you
to take the right actions,
you had better pray harder.
[18] Paradoxically, wealth is really ‘yours’
only when you use it
in ‘richly’ meaningful ways to benefit others.
[19] The Buddha-to-be [Prince Siddhartha]
renounced even royal wealth of kingship
because money could not buy happiness,
and because realisation of the path to Buddhahood
is worth more than all the money in the world.
[20] Even the richest person
cannot bring half a cent
to the next life,
as karma is one’s only baggage.
