Stonepeace (181-190)

[181] If we do not practise repentance,
we are being unforgiving to ourselves,
as we are sabotaging ourselves
karmically with our misdeeds,
that will have rebounding negative effects.

[182] Are there more terrifying humans than ghosts?
As terrifying ghosts were mostly terrifying humans,
there is probably as many of one as the other.

[183] If one is not stupid enough
to ignore good advice,
one is just stubborn enough,
though it is stupid enough
to be stubborn enough too.

[184] If ugly character
truly mars a ‘beautiful’ form,
true beauty must then
be beautiful character,
truly unmarred by ‘ugly’ form.

[185] Fret over inevitable pain
aggravates it.
Acceptance of inevitable pain
understands it.

[186] As our habits either diminish or deepen,
it is crucial to deepen the wholesome ones
and to diminish the unwholesome ones.

[187] When it comes to the unenlightened,
their reliability comes on a sliding scale,
sliding forward and backward at times.
This is why we take refuge in the enlightened.

[188] It is a tiresome chore
only if you see it so.
It is a challenging practice
if only you see it so.

[189] 持戒不犯不易,
犯戒能忏即可。
戒不持更易犯,
不如持戒少犯。

To observe precepts without breaking them is not easy,
but having broken them, one can practise repentance.
Since to not observe precepts is easier to break them,
one might as well observe precepts to break them less.

[190] Excess focus on physical healing
in this limited life is self-defeating,
forgetting that death is eventual,
that complete healing is spiritual too,
liberation from life and death.
