Stonepeace (551-560)

[551] Apathy is the sleeping of compassion.
Bodhicitta is the awakening of compassion.

[552] Relatively good physical medicine
alleviates suffering.
Absolutely pure spiritual medicine
eradicates suffering.

[553] Treasure the bearers of unpleasant truths
because bitter medicine often holds the cure for the disease of complacency,
as in the case of the Buddha,
who taught the First Noble Truth of suffering,
the realisation of which is the first step towards liberation from it.

[554] That which is interesting and worldly
is not always
that which is meaningful,
although often mistaken so.

That which is meaningful and spiritual
is always
that which is interesting,
although often neglected so.

[555] Boredom is simply
attachment to the absent,
and aversion to the present.

Boredom can urge us
to live with more presence,
to live with less absence.

[556] Hope with wisdom is realistic and worthy.
Hope with delusion is unrealistic and unworthy.

[557] Give up the unworthy thoughts
in your mind.
not on the misguided people
in your life.

[558] Our ‘hopes and fears’
might be euphemism
for our ‘greed and hatred’;
‘attachment and aversion’.

[559] Disappointment is just a reminder
to further align with reality
with greater diligence.

[560] Just as defiled beings can karmically create
the worst of realms called hells,
the pure Buddhas can karmically create
the best of schools called Pure Lands.
