Mosquito & Meat

Story:

‘A student was meditating in Ajahn Fuang’s presence when –
in a spasm of mindlessness –
she slapped a mosquito that was biting her arm.

Ajahn Fuang commented,
“You charge a high price for your blood, don’t you?
The mosquito asks for a drop, and you take its life in exchange.”‘

Thought:

And also, for a piece of meat,
why ask for a sentient being’s life?

  1. Re: I would have replied, it’s death is worth my blood as I killed it with intention that it will not be reborn as a mosquito again.

Reply: Who has the power to kill any being while ensuring that being will not be born so again? If there is such a power, when humans are killed, will they lose the precious human rebirth? Also, insects can be reborn many times as insects in a row. If animals can be released from the animal realm simply by killing them, the Buddha would had taught so. But he taught to be kind to all beings.

Re: I willing to take its karma and burn it with my intense practice.

Reply: If it is possible to take on another being’s negative karma, the Buddha would had taken up all ours in one go as he has perfect practice already.

Re: There are too many to kill.

    Reply: Why kill then?

Re: By destroying them, deadly disease like dengue will not harm others.

Reply: How about destroying humans who destroy billions of animals and insects, so that they will not harm other beings? Of course this does not make sense. The truth is, in 2014, in the context of Singapore, there were 18,335 dengue cases but only 5 humans died. They are usually already old and with sickness. What we need to do is ensure there are no conditions for breeding, the providing of which is humans’ fault. All sentient beings, as taught by the Buddha, are our past lives’ mothers in the interconnected rounds of rebirth. Also, mosquitoes only live for 7 days. When we see them, we should chant the name of Amituofo to connect purely with them, in the hope that they can reach Pure Land eventually. Those who are kind are less likely to be bitten too. Those murderous are more likely bitten.
