Vegan Farming

The Surangama Sutra taught that Bodhisattvas do not even bear to tread upon grass (to prevent trampling on plants which shelter insects). But what about Chinese monks who do farming?

It might seem like a conflict, but they are supposed to do some chanting to invite insects to move away before farming. They should also move about more mindfully, watching where they tread, though there might be some casualties? Also, better that more mindful people farm than the less mindful farm.
