You : Critical Mass

The initial critical mass needed
for creating the actual critical mass
is just one person – why not you?

– Stonepeace

Likewise, the one critical for spreading the Buddhadharma was the Buddha,
who shared the Dharma to form the Sangha. Thus was the Triple Gem formed.

“The biggest challenge facing civilisation and globalisation is a moral one, not a political one. And it is a collective problem as much as it is a personal one. Just as [Al] Gore attempts to spread his message city by city, person by person, to accumulate support to make up the threshold needed for reversing the situation, we too need to make up the critical mass. If we are not of the positive critical mass, we make up the other critically wrong mass that is bound for mass destruction. We the masses can be weapons of mass destruction too. Political terrorism is not the only global problem. We are terrorists too – of the planet’s life itself. A big problem is that many think they are not part of the problem, or that they can’t be part of the solution. Truth is, if you do not become part of the solution, you are probably part of the problem. Since the solution takes every effort, every effort counts.”

“Incidentally, vegetarians are individually less connected to the emission of greenhouse gases by about 1.5 tons a year. Meat-consumption creates more greenhouse gases than all motor transportation combined. Homer [Simpson] ‘single-handedly’ causes the tipping point of Springfield’s ecologically dismal situation. It results in the government’s drastic pseudo-solution of encasing Springfield within a dome, so as to contain the disaster. As we know, Homer is not downright evil – he just fumbles along in life with overwhelming greed for food, unmindfulness and delusion!…

However, for his dumping mistake, Homer becomes the witch to be hunted, as the trapped Springfielders point their accusing fingers at him. But was it wholly Homer’s fault? No – he merely tipped the scale, while the other ungreen Springfielders had added weights to it earlier. In this sense, everyone was responsible. Or rather, irresponsible! Everyone let everyone down – especially those like Lisa, who strove hard to make the green cause heard.”

  1. It is quite sad as many think this is not their problem or too big for them to do anything and they have other important stuff to handle!

I once spoke with a neighbour, to her – global warming is something beyond her scope and told me if she keeps this on her “agenda” which is already full of chaotic stuff, she would have more to worry and don’t want to “die” so fast … If I stand in her shoes, one thing I see is she might not have so big a capacity to take up such a heavy topic.

Sometime, I wonder if one does not really care about saving the environment via doing simple acts like cut down on usage like plastic bags etc, recycling … Would they think of going vegetarian as a GOOD WAY to help our only EARTH?

How can we “tell” others that by doing so, it is actually to their benefits … after all, some people are wired to act on things that really benefit them?

  2. I think we just need to remind them of the devastating effects of not caring for the environment, and how the present climate crisis is really mostly our collective fault, that needs to be solved collectively – because we are all interconnected.

It helps to highlight shocking chaotic climate news. A good example is the current surge of high temperature in Oz – to 46 degress Celsius! Almost 10 degrees above human temperature! About 100 humans killed already… http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090208/ts_afp/australiaweatherfire Amituofo 🙁

  3. Meat and Global Warming is just like:
当一只蝴蝶在世界的一个地方拍着翅膀, 在世界的另一个角落, 就会下着大雨 – 蝴蝶效應 (Butterfly Effect)

Honestly, if not my werido boy was interested and done Global Warming project for his social study portfolio in the past few years, I won’t even know about it.

Again, the challenging part is bringing awareness on Global Warming and getting people putting some efforts and actions into it. Sometime people do agree in theory but to carry it out (like going green campaign, we are so lack behinds some other countries) it is so difficult for them.

Just like, after watching the video on slaughtering of farm animals. One of the teachers mentioned in class to the students, it is wrong to kill the animals but just could not resist the tasty meat. What is going to happen to the thinking of these students after listening to such comment?

When I tell people how cruelty animal farming is, they told me when they went on holiday to NZ or OZ, the cattle are roaming freely on eating on the green pasture (such a beautiful peaceful scenery … ). Would they think I am lying? Or Will they decide to eat those cattle raised in such environment to feel better?

Not to feel disheartened but some food for thought …
