Dinner: Mortuary Inside

I was at a group dinner last weekend, during which the conversation centered mostly around food. That seen as ‘great food’ for most is but burnt carcasses to me, no matter how well masked the meat is with herbs and spices. I can no longer comprehend why anyone can be fascinated by meat, isn’t it obvious that it’s the seasoning that renders it tasty? I was wondering, do I really need to spell out the truth to everyone?

It was no surprise that I was the only vegan at the table. What was appalling was the amount of meat ordered. So much there was that a few plates were left untouched. Ordering animal flesh is already unthinkable, but to waste animals’ lives by not finishing the meat asked for is atrocious!

Is it really that hard to go for a kinder diet? Or does the word ‘compassion’ simply not exist when it comes to filling one’s stomach? Why would any sensible person want their stomach to be a mortuary? Have so many human hearts grown as cold as a mortuary’s freezer? Please, during this season of giving, at least reduce the demand for animal lives. Give the helpless animals a break. Go vegan! If not, go vegetarian!

  1. Oops… thanks for the note on the difference. Maybe visitors of New Fut Kai can request for less mock stuff. That said, more mock stuff are made from healthier ingredients these days. Not sure about NFK’s though.

  2. It is so glad to read Wen and Mong’s comments.

In fact, I have a very strong feeling that Buddhists have built up enough compassion and good karma to go Vegetarian. It is just that there are some hindrance and it is not too difficult to get rid of.

And to be able to born in Singapore, it is a really good chance to go vegetarian ,because we can find Vegetarian versions for different types of cuisines and all of them within walking distance. Its just a matter of time when Singapore would be a Veg*n ‘s Paradise …

We need a friendlier vegetarian environment. We need to share more Veg*n eateries info with Non-vegetarian and Vegetarians, VSS Food outlet directory is just not enough. There are many good sources etc, we need to tap on those – like hungrygowhere, soshioke.com etc to reach far …

There is also a need to push for yummy and healthy Veg food at Hawker Centre and Foodcourt etc. I appreciate veg eateries greatly, in order to go forward, they need feedbacks, suggestions & encouragements.

There are lots more that we can do, if possible and time permits, I would like to share my crazy ideas. Again, you don’t have to be a Vegetarian to be able to share views and help to promote veg*nism. Who knows, you can even come up with greater ideas :woot:

Promoting vegetarianism (compassionate) or Buddhism, just like telling a little kid how good reading is, but without books and little direction, how can this innocent kid know how to start and enjoy reading throughout his whole life? ^_^ …

  3. Mong,

We are ready when we decide we are.

obama and nike quotations… “Yes we can! Just do it!” 😆 Don’t be afraid you can’t remain a vegetarian for long, just take the 1st step and the rest will follow.

  4. Something to share… Me turned vegetarian overnight in ’93 after giving a Buddhist talk related to environmentalism. While this might seem incredible, it’s really not. It came from facing squarely the hard ill facts about meat-eating during research for the talk, and responding in the only rational way I could.

The thing is, all vegetarians had at some point, turned vegetarian overnight. So, as dreamy put it, this first step has to be taken. Even if there are lapses, we can always turn vegetarian from the next meal onwards. It’s never too late… while it’s always a good time to go vegetarian. One meal vegetarian is at least better than one meal with meat.

:p < Tongue out: May we hanker less after a few inches of taste! :straight: < Tongue back in!

  5. Sigh, the sad thing is seeing your friends/family members thinking you are a freak and unable to convince them of their carnivorous behavior when they feast. 🙁

  6. Going vegetarian is easy if you don’t need to worry too much and if you are doing for the sake of the animals etc, you will get lots of “supports and strengths” everywhere indirectly … Buddha will help you.

The merits you accumulate in being compassionate to the animals will return to you someday when you need helps or maybe during difficult times or … You will be able to see this yourself down the road, just have the confidence and be a little patience.

Vegetarian Food is getting delectable and there is no need to worry too much about it is too boring. This portion is easy to tackle and there are ways too.

It is the thought or intention of going vegetarian which is not easy to come by – is very beautiful and compassionate … let it grows – the little compassionate seed in you, give it a chance to grow BIG and makes this world a beautiful place …

Maybe, there should be a “place” for veg*n to share their stories on going vegetarian and what benefits or how it changed their life etc. So non-veg*n or new veg*n know that they are not alone and have more confidence in going this directions …

  7. iloveveg, don’t worry too much.

When more and more people go vegetarian or semi-vegetarian and see the benefits of going vegetarians, that fact will be ABLE to convince them of their carnivorous behavior.

Reply: Maybe you can share this video with your family and friends – http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=Vcd From feedback, it changes many people’s minds about eating animals.

Reply: Those interested can subscribe to the local Vegetarian Society’s (Singapore) e-newsletter at http://www.vss.sg . VSS organises vege outings, where vege folks can hang out with one another and exchange notes. The newsletter also welcomes sharing articles on turning vege. Queries are also welcome. An alternative place to share vege stories is here online! Feel free to simply share your story as the next comment following this ^_^

  9. Hello, went to Fortune Centre during lunch last friday for lunch. Very nice!
Just to update, I have not chosen meat dishes since 30 Dec. There are occasions when I slip unknowingly when my daughter left an uneaten fishball on her plate and I just polish it off and only when the juices are trickling down the throat before I realised, “oops”. Anyway, I am paying more attention to what goes into my mouth.
    Ilovevege,
I agree with you on that point. I didn’t let my family know, just eat the vegetables served everyday. I don’t really want them to make special provision for me. I guess I will tell them when they ask.

  10. Great! Mongs. Those little accidents are alright. So happy for you. 😀

When I started to go vegetarian, I am able to find vegetarian stalls easily around my work place. I pray for them to flourish, so I’ve vegetarian food, more can enjoy the food and lesser animals being killed. It worked, whenever I switch job, there will be some veg stalls nearby and I would pamper myself with yummy food at veg restaurants often. It all becomes so easy.

VSS Forum is one place, if it is something related to Buddhism cum Vegetarianism, guess this place is more suitable.
