Phantom : Special Meal

Hee: I wanna eat something special for dinner.
Haw: But where is something special?
Hee: I don’t know.
Haw: And what is something special?
Hee: I don’t know either.
Haw: Looks like you’re letting yourself be haunted by a unknown meal from nowhere in particular.
Hee: Craving leads to suffering!
Haw: Yes, the more you crave, the more you suffer!

  1. I was sick for some months and when my illness didn’t get any better, i started to turn to Amituofo for help when i nian fo with many expectations from Amituofo. My illness did not turn for the better but in fact got worst at times. My illnes turned so bad that in the end, i gave up all but just nian fo. It was only when i stop asking Amituofo for help to make me recover asap so that i can join the retreats which i signed up for or wishes to attend, stop asking Amituofo to let me be ok asap and not have to seek other treatments which sounded very scary to me, and just mindfully “Nian fo”. The moment i put down my many cravings yesterday, my illness in fact took a turn for the better this morning. Hopefully, i can maintain this peaceful state in the many days to come and also when i truly recover from my illness that i will never forget this lesson.

And thanks, Shian for your article above. It really delivers a wake up call for me that Nian Fo works only when i put down my attachments/ cravings.

  2. Amituofo! May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you. Here is a prayer I wrote today, that is somewhat related… (Medical advice should be sought properly first.)

By the practice of single-minded mindfulness of Amituofo,
By the power of Amituofo’s blessings –
If I (you) can recover, may I (you) recover swiftly.
If I (you) cannot recover, may I (you) be reborn in Pureland swiftly,
so that I (you) may be liberated swiftly, and return to liberate all swiftly.
May I (you) let go of all thoughts of life and death, pain and pleasure,
and simply be mindful of Amituofo.
    Amituofo, Amituofo, Amituofo…

  3. Thanks for the above sharing. I will memorise this prayer and keep it in mind whether i get better (or not).It gives one ‘strength’ when read out or even if one just run it through the mind…it seems to internalise in me too. At the same time, one of your previous post quoting Stonepeace could not be more appropriate and meaningful as well:

    Having a heavy sickness
might mean you are running out of time.
    Practise the Dharma diligently!

    Having a light sickness
might mean it will get more serious.
    Practise the Dharma diligently!

    Having no sickness
might mean you might get sick soon.
Practise the Dharma diligently! – Stonepeace

May all be well, happy and healthy and practice the Dharma diligently!

    Amituofo.
