Irony : Real Life

There is a hot drama serial on TV that just ended its run. I’m not really a follower of dramas because I’m too impatient to follow the multiple twists and turns…. even though that’s the way real life often is. So, as a disclaimer, I don’t really know what the fuss is about. There was a big uproar among viewers after the last episode was screened – as many were unhappy over the apparently bittersweet ending, that they found to be more bitter than sweet. In the papers, an interviewed viewer said that it was a letdown because much time was invested in following the series, while the scriptwriter felt it was realistic, though regret was also expressed at not having pleased the viewers adequately.

At the risk of offending hardcore fans, I find all these quite amusing. How so? The drama, with a mostly larger than life dramatism, is not real life, while it was taken too seriously by many viewers. However, the drama does reflects the ironies of real life – because life does not always dish us sweet treats as expected – just as it did not dish out a sweet enough ending for the viewers! The disgruntled viewers should thus reflect on their ability to take in the bitter with/out the sweet. This could be the biggest lesson they needed to accept and learn from the series, instead of rejecting it. Should entertainment reflect real life or deviate from it. Some would think the latter is better, since entertainment is often for living out fantasies. Fair enough, but shouldn’t a good fantasy bring us back to real life too?

Life is bittersweet
when we have aversion towards the bitter;
when we have attachment towards the sweet.
Is life really bitter or sweet?

  1. Sometimes even if the ending is a perfectly happy one, we feel satisfied for a while but drop from a high place when the euphoria ebbs away upon returning to stark reality. Feelings of nonfulfillment and inferiority can eat away at us when we compare our perceived less than satisfactory state of being with the utopian reel world.

    Rather than spending too much time living out our fantasies through the media, why not endeavour to materialise our dreams in real life instead, even if they have to be moderated for practical reasons. That way, we become the scriptwriter of our own life and will certainly have more control over the kind of ending we want 😆

  2. Ever wonder why Bollywood makes so many moviessss? Ever wonder why 金庸武侠小说 so popular among Chinese all over the world? Guess, same theory I think, many people are having not so good life (too much sufferring)and crave for something good, be it in stories, movies, drama series … as a form of solace …

    A psychology question on human behaviour … Maybe that could explain why people have spiritual need …

  3. It’s sad but true that ‘happiness’ in life for some seem to be from witnessing happy fictitious lives on the screen! It’s like a warped form of ‘rejoicing in the happiness’ of others – because the folks in question are not really there. It also leads to the other extreme of feeling indignation and anger at those who portrayed themselves ‘realistically’ as baddies on TV 👿 Much ado over nothing leh…

  4. This is how our world functions for many thousands of years, I guess. Not only this, there are many people who live in virtual world rather than the real world. I can’t really understand, too big an issue.

    It could be there is nothing to do or people wanting something to divert from their current problem that leads them getting so involved or they could have similar problem and deep down they don’t want that kind of outcome etc. It could also be the nature of human …

    一种米养百种人, in this world, it consists of people of different mentalities, capabilities, IQ, EQ and …

    Just base on a sentence or one reaction, might not be able to fully understand how a person think and react. Sometime, people just say something for fun or unintentionally or could be no linkage to what they going to do or it could also link to some problems …

    There are also people who go into extreme, deep down there, there are hidden problems, and it is not so simple …

    Why human loves to see ‘Happiness’ or good ending? Partially, it is our brought up and social conditioning, I think. No one would think and views sufferings, unhappy ending etc as something goods, the more the merrier. Sufferings is always associate with bad, and good beget good, anything out of this norm, might not be easily accepted.

    Unless, we have more true stories, programmes, movies etc that convey the message that such things are not at all that bad, you will benefits from it … :straight:
