Joyride with the Grouch?

We know that Oscar’s the Grouch,
but hey, it makes no marketing sense
to scare the kiddies away,
if you want them to slot in a coin to take the ride.
So let’s give him a smile!

We know that Barney’s always friendly,
so it makes much marketing sense
to keep the kiddies coming,
if you want them to slot in a coin to take the ride.
So let’s keep him a-smiling!

But even so, discerning kiddies will know
it’s unlike Oscar to smile, and keep away?
Be the friendly Barney in everyday life then, not the grouchy Oscar!
Lest kiddies think you’re an Oscar up to no good when you smile,
out just to take them for a ride!

  1. Actually, coincidentally, I had been thinking about using Oscar & Elmo in an illustration about why Oscar is so un-likeable, and Elmo is so likeable.

I used to think that Oscar was pretty cool,
not caring about what others think,
    and doing things his way.
    However, only recently, I thought,
    Oscar is also the Grouch,
always complaining about anything and everything.
Somehow, he too longed to be loved and accepted,
but may have been too proud to realise,
or feel that Love should be a Given Right.

    As compared to Elmo,
who is always so popular with kids,
and never fails to bring a smile to the ones around him,
    I realised that
Elmo is happy, not because he is loved,
but because he is a giver of love,
which also makes him so loveable.

So, are you an Oscar or Elmo?
And do you see any Oscars that you could help,
or Elmos that you could learn from?

  2. Nice! Comes with pics too!

    😀

The Oscar vs Elmo syndrome reminds me of this:
    http://www.moonpointer.com/index.php?itemid=1149

    On ‘他不快乐,因为没有人给他快乐的原因‘,
would think that it’s more because he didn’t water
the seed of happiness (Buddha-nature) in himself,
    by flowering for others’ happiness.

  3. On‘他不快乐,因为没有人给他快乐的原因’,
I guess what I was trying to say was
that Oscar feels that “Happiness” comes from others,
hence it is so hard for him, or anyone, to feel happy.

Thanx for sharing the above 2 links 🙂

For me, I know I’ve this Oscar in me,
especially when I feel others make me unhappy,
and I do hope, and will work at it,
that one day, the Elmo in me will show
    😉

  4. i see…

i think most of us are ‘elmoscars’ –
hybrids of Elmo and Oscar –
    till we cultivate better!
