I was at a group dinner last weekend, during which the conversation centered mostly around food. That seen as ‘great food’ for most is but burnt carcasses to me, no matter how well masked the meat is with herbs and spices. I can no longer comprehend why anyone can be fascinated by meat, isn’t it obvious that it’s the seasoning that renders it tasty? I was wondering, do I really need to spell out the truth to everyone?
It was no surprise that I was the only vegan at the table. What was appalling was the amount of meat ordered. So much there was that a few plates were left untouched. Ordering animal flesh is already unthinkable, but to waste animals’ lives by not finishing the meat asked for is atrocious!
Is it really that hard to go for a kinder diet? Or does the word ‘compassion’ simply not exist when it comes to filling one’s stomach? Why would any sensible person want their stomach to be a mortuary? Have so many human hearts grown as cold as a mortuary’s freezer? Please, during this season of giving, at least reduce the demand for animal lives. Give the helpless animals a break. Go vegan! If not, go vegetarian!
yes, meat-eating is an extravagance with costs that are too high… costing human health, animal lives, environmental well-being… :alien: < Alien looking grimly at our planet's grim condition>
I must say I really salute each & everyone of you vegans out there..I tried not to eat meat(for health reasons) but whenever i see the vegetarian dishes..it just dont look appealing to me..vegetables provided by the vegatarains stall look cold & oily(personally i like food warm)& i cant eat salads or such as I’ve got weak stomach..just dont know what to do about starting a vegan diet xD
Hi wen, the alternative to cold and oily food is food that requires ‘instant’ cooking, e.g. hor fun, fried rice or wanton soup noodles etc. And you can always request for less oil, less mock meat and more vegetables (that’s what i do :p ). But if you feel hor fun or fried rice aren’t nutritious enough, you can always order some side dishes to go with the warm dish.
As a matter of fact, many non-vegetarian foodstalls also have cold and oily foods, so i guess it’s not solely vegetarian foodstalls’ problem. i think hawkers of both all foodstalls nowadays are trying to keep their food as warm as possible for as long as possible.
If you don’t know, many vegetarian foodstalls in Fortune Centre at Waterloo street offer warm food with great healthy varieties to choose from. Do drop by if you happened to be around that area, in any case, you can also check out the website of Vegetarian Society Singapore (VSS) for more information on eating places.
hahah amusing use of the alien icon 😆
guanzhao, chance upon what you mentioned about the vegetarian foodstalls at Fortune Centre. Tks for the info.
I have been thinking about going vegetarian for so long but I just can’t do it. I had Yong Tau Foo for lunch today and although I tried to pick the vege stuff, I still ended up with hotdog and dumpling. I am aware of my thoughts when i picked up the food. I guess I am not ready.
A devoted Tibetan Buddhist friend of mine told me once that he is totally aware of the benefits and importance of being a vegetarian but he is just now ready. Once he is ready, he will be a vegetarian. I guess we are just finding excuses for ourselves. 🙂
There is a small perhaps little known vegetarian restaurant in Kitchener Rd that sells very good food at very reasonable prices with no GST, service charge etc. The restaurant is more than 50 years old. No mock stuff is used in the dishes. Many ingredients are handmade using gluten or fresh bean curd skins. Ingredients like fresh mushrooms including fresh plump straw mushrooms and sugarcane flowers are also used. My favourite are the “chicken” balls made with fresh bean curd skins. The balls are not deep fried so it is healthy and can be cooked with kailan, sweet sour with pineapples etc, or in hor fun style which is really yummy. The spring rolls are so good packed full of fresh vegetables and mushrooms. On Sundays they have vegetarian curry, and on 1st and 15th day of lunar month, they have special soup all cheap and very good, $5/- more than enough for 2. Chinese New Year is coming, try their Yu Sheng. It is done in the traditional recipe not the washout versions that are served even in famous non-veg restaurants. Name of restaurant is Zhen Fut Sai Kai and if you order the “chicken” ball hor fun, ask for bitter guord to go with it as well.
Hi, it has moved.

I find it incredibly easy to go vege by focusing on the pain and suffering the animals go through. There is no knife at our necks forcing us to eat meat, while the knives are at their necks, forcing them to be meat 😮
Hi mong, what you crave for is just that few inches of taste on your tongue. And ironically, most seasonings are in fact from herbs, spices and vegetables. Real animal meat without seasonings is in fact bland.
We can take all the time we need to be ready, but sad to say, the animals in the slaughterhouses do not have that luxury of time to wait for us to be ready ;-( For more Buddhist perspectives on vegetarianism, please visit : http://moonpointer.com/bvf.php Jiayou!
Hi Sedna,
The one you pointed out is not the same as the one I wrote about. New Fut Kai is actually a taiwan styled vegetarian that was operating a few doors away from Zhen Fut Sai Kai until it moved away some months ago.
I had eaten at New before and they used lots of mock stuff!
Please do give Zhen .. a try. YOu can see a picture of a fat jovial yellow robe Buddha. Tel no is 62912350, closed on Mondays unless it is 1st or 15th day lunar month
