Super Short Story (168): Phantom

She didn’t realise that
she was secretly responding to every guy met
with a sense of interest or disgust,
with the few in between simply ‘skipped’.

She didn’t realise that
that was precisely why
she hasn’t met a ‘suitable’ guy yet –
because she places her judgement too soon.

She didn’t realise that
she was as if already tensely picking a lover
before learning to befriend
with an ordinary mind.

She didn’t realise that
not giving others chances
also means not giving chances to herself,
that she doesn’t know what she had missed.

She didn’t realise that
she could be making many dear and real friends
even if not finding a wonderful love,
that she need not be pining only for a phantom lover.

She didn’t realise that
true love is built on true friendship,
that she shouldn’t expect love to only happen
in an inexplicable magic moment of mutual interest.

She didn’t realise that
that would probably be lust at first sight,
that is easy come and easy go, with nothing further,
which is the case for her now.
