Best words of wisdom from the third Shrek movies, by Arty:
Just because people treat you
like a villain, or an ogre or just some loser
doesn’t mean you are one. What matters most
is what you think
of yourself. If there’s something you really want,
or someone you want to be,
the only person standing in your way is you.
There’s no need to unwittingly demonise ourselves just because others do – even if in an overwhelming way. No matter what you think of yourself, remember that you have Buddha-nature awaiting to blossom. At the end of the day, what we truly want is for this Buddha-nature to blossom. Who we really want is to be Buddhas. And the only one standing in our way is our illusion of ‘self’, which we cling to, thus impeding transformation.
Others will always have an opinion of us, no matter what good we do.
So, as long as we are doing good and right, let’s not allow how others view us to affect our thinking and judgement.
Perhaps we could look deeper within ourselves and with some patience, things may turn out better than expected.
Quote from an enlightened soul – “how miserable it is if our happiness depends on what others think of us.”
Noself 🙂
Yup, though how others view us might offer some relevant feedback for our improvement too. On a related note, from stonepeace –
You let others demonise themselves
when you let them demonise you.
(This means there’s some responsibility to clear our names too – lest others create bad karma while we do nothing about it.) Amituofo
