India Adventure (15): Real Fresh Chicken

Turning these defenseless animals into egg-producing machines
with no consideration for their welfare whatsoever
is a degradation of our own humanity.

– His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

HHDL joins the campaign against battery (caged) hens. Let’s support and follow his example at http://causes.com/causes/523420 During his recent Southeast Asia Teaching stint at Dharamsala, he remarked about how he once visited a farm in Japan with 2 million egg-bearing chickens. He asked about what happens to the chickens after their egg-bearing days… and the answer was slaughter.

On another occasion, he said this,  ‘The abuse we inflict on hens has always been particularly disturbing to me and I have always been particularly concerned toward how these animals are treated in industrial food production… Switching to cage-free eggs would reduce the suffering of these animals.’ The bad news is most eggs these days come from battery hens. Even non-battery or free-range hens mostly get killed for meat later. It’s easier to give up chickens and eggs entirely.

In Dharamsala, there are small shops with signs that say, ‘Fresh Chicken’. (Click here to see such as scene: http://flickr.com/photos/devocean/39453171/lightbox) The chickens are so fresh that they are killed on demand! The chickens are in situations worse than modern batteries. The only true fresh chicken are the chickens running freely, who never get exploited or killed for human consumption.
