Q: Is helping my enemies the right thing to do?
A: It is right, provided that it doesn’t harm anyone, and if it helps the ones helpers and the helped to increase in compassion and wisdom – directly or indirectly. Helping your ‘enemies’ might be the only way to make them no longer your ‘enemies’; but your friends instead.
Q: If they take the help for granted, should we still help?
A: If our help does not help increase their compassion and wisdom (including appreciation), our help could be not skilful enough. If not helping means losing our compassion, it’s not good. But if helping is for getting appreciation, it’s not true helping. If not helping helps them to better appreciate past compassion taken for granted, it’s good. Thereafter, we should continue helping.
