Love Of Words

In the movie ‘The Words’, an old ex-writer, who became estranged from his wife many years ago, after she accidentally lost his manuscript on their semi-tragic love story. Having realised he was wrong to have blamed her, to the extent of causing their breakup, he uttered, ‘… my tragedy was that I loved words more than I loved the woman who inspired me to write them.’ I thought this is a terrific example of clinging to a symbol (the manuscript) at the expense of missing the substance (the love). Don’t mistake the finger as the moon it points at!
