He has a theory about why many ghost stories feature women with long hair. Perhaps those who like to wear their hair this way reflects their tendency to be more emotional, with stronger attachment (and even aversion), including to something very immediate, such as their lovely locks? Overwhelming attachment can lead to becoming wandering spirits.

Or these stories are just sticking to the stereotype of flowing hair with flowing dresses for more dramatic mysterious flitting effects? And yes, the hair helps to hide a gradually or suddenly unveiled ghastly face for equally stereotypical scares too!
