‘Sherlock Holmes’ is Smart But Unenlightened!

In a scene of the movie ‘Sherlock Holmes’, the famed super sleuth makes sharp observations and astute deductions on the character of Dr. Watson’s fiancée. He gets most of them right, but a key one wrong, His wrong conclusion hurt her feelings as she stomps off in rage. It made me think… as sure as we can be at times, some of our presumptuous beliefs are but conjectures taken as truth. In the instance above, Holmes failed to detect the imperfection of his detecting skills!

While confidence is a strength, over-confidence is a weakness. One who walks the Middle Path knows what one is truly confident in and what one is not, of what is worth investing confidence in and what is not. Holmes might be relatively masterful in his skills of detection for solving mysteries out there, but the primary one is in the mind and of the mind. Why do we suffer and how can we overcome suffering? In the film, he is portrayed as long suffering in quirky ways!
