Cause for Alarm

When the fire alarm went off,
right after the film ended,
the folks within took their time
to saunter out of the theatre.

Why do we not rush to get out?
Isn’t the alarm already cause for alarm?
Or do we need to know the cause for the alarm?

Of what use is the alarm by itself then?

Reminds me of every time we hear a sudden death.
Isn’t it cause for reflection
that we too can die any time?
Why then do we waste a moment of time?

  1. yet, from another point of view,
if upon hearing alarm, people panic and start scrumbling blindly, more alarm would be raised.
so too, when facing possible death.

In Singapore, we have fire drills, so that we know what to do in times of emergency, should there be a real fire.
In Buddhism, we learn about the reality of death (and hence, life), such that we too know what to do when the time comes.

Either extremes, too complacant or too panicky, often brings more harm.

Staying calm and clear-minded is the middle path,
yet it takes more than words to make achieve this state of balance.

  2. Agree…

    But they were sauntering…
not reacting with the slightest sense of urgency,
and I was one of them!

  3. Yes I’ve noticed this too, that people don’t seem to be alarmed by fire alarms. Perhaps we’ve had too many fire drills, every time the alarm rings, we assume it’s another drill. And when I see nobody seems to be alarmed, I act like them too! Frankly, I’ve not learnt anything from fire drills, except to accept them as just another drill, as I carry on with my mundane tasks.

  4. 🙂
i wonder, what happens, if we have a meditation drill from time to time too? would be interesting, if we are all trained to, in midst of work etc, just drop everything and breathe :D:)

  5. i think people tend to follow crowds. If most are apathetic, most of the others will be. Then again, it just takes one in the crowd to shout ‘Fire!’ to mobilise everyone?

Too many cooks spoil the soup and too many drills actually make the alarm less alarming. Hmmm…

Yes, a meditation drill would be interesting! Then again, we can set scheduled periods during the day to take 5 or 10 to meditate too… if we have the discipline that is… Amituofo

Different people has different feelings (may feel or not feel at all) when we hear death. We see this everywhere and everyday – those fatal accidents, disaster in the news, the chicken, fish and meat we eat during meal time, it is already telling us the story – they had died and therefore they are cooked,

I know I will died and I also can tell other it can happen any moment or talk to other about it and say we need to learn to prepare for dying or crisis. But deep inside me, it is not rooted deep in my conscious. I start to plan for other things like retirement, old ages more but not so much about the death and life after deaths, I discovered this lately.

Maybe, there is a part of me that tell me I still have time. I tell myself, I shall balance this and hopefully, I could keep to it, as delusion is a great pulling force to the other side.

*p.s every 40secs in the world (if I am not wrong), one person died by killing themselves …
