From ‘Everything is F*cked: A Book about Hope’ by Mark Manson:
Heroism isn’t just bravery or guts or shrewd maneuvering. These things are common and are often used in unheroic ways. No, being heroic is the ability to conjure hope when there is none. To strike a match to light up the void… To take a situation where everything seems to be absolutely f*cked and still somehow make it good…
Heroism has a philosophical component to it. There’s some great “Why?” that heroes bring to the table – some incredible cause or belief that goes unshaken, no matter what. And this is why, as a culture, we are so desperate for a hero today.
Comment: Bodhisattvas and Buddhas are our spiritual heroes, who transform suffering to bliss personally, inspiring and guiding all others to do so too. Their great “Why?” is firm Bodhicitta.
